The threats to pangolins from illegal wildlife trade have become increasingly prominent in Malawi in recent years. In 2021, the number of court cases in Malawi involving the trade in pangolins exceeded those of ivory for the first time. Funding from the Pangolin Crisis Fund is supporting the only dedicated programme of pangolin rescue, rehabilitation, release and post-release monitoring in Malawi. Based at Lilongwe Wildlife Centre and other field sites, this programme delivers best practice veterinary and rehabilitation care to save and release as many pangolins as possible, fill critical knowledge gaps on pangolin ecology and, ultimately, sustain pangolin populations in Malawi.
