Planet Indonesia is putting Sunda pangolin conservation in the hands of local communities across West Kalimantan. As part of their broader framework of facilitating community-run management systems that address rural poverty and limited livelihood opportunities, with PCF funding they will integrate both in-situ and ex-situ interventions aimed at addressing both the hunting and trade of the Sunda Pangolins. In-situ interventions will include support for forest patrols, by community SMART patrol units in tandem with relevant government management authorities. Alternatively, ex-situ activities will include supporting government agencies with trade research results to address demand-side factors of pangolin trade in West Kalimantan. Additionally, this project consists of a research component that will attempt to unravel activities carried out by different trade intermediaries and provide recommendations to address the trade in pangolin derivatives.
