On December 17, 2021 Super Typhoon Rai hit the central and northern part of the Palawan group of islands in the Philippines. With 105 mph winds, it devastated about 90% of infrastructure, leaving the majority of the population without shelter, electricity, water, and communication. In addition to impacting the human population on these islands, this typhoon caused massive devastation to the forest and wildlife living in those ecosystems. With PCF funds, the Katala Foundation Inc. (KFI) will supply basic needs to the wildlife enforcement officers, pangolin-program staff, and community members who have been impacted by the typhoon. This work is critical to protecting wildlife, especially animals like pangolins that are used for bushmeat. Natural disasters like this typhoon lead to instability and starvation, and bushmeat poaching rises during such times. By providing disaster relief, the KFI is both helping people and keeping pangolins off the menu.
